Sociomuseology and Cultural Accessibility Study Group

The study group Sociomuseology and Cultural Accessibility is a collective of researchers from the UNESCO Chair “Education, Citizenship and Cultural Diversity” that has the support of the Department of Museology of the Lusófona University and CeiED – Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development, and the FCT Project – Foundation for Science and Technology CEECIND/04717/2017. The Study Group includes researchers from the UNESCO Chair, CeiED, and the Doctoral and Master’s Programs in Museology at the Lusófona University of Humanities and Technology in Lisbon. The group’s initiative seeks to exchange knowledge and good practices in the Ibero-American context, namely between Brazil and Portugal.

The meetings propose a reflective and dialogic discussion about universal accessibility and inclusion within the scope of Museology, especially from the perspective of Sociomuseology. To this end, meetings open to external participation are proposed, with the aim of raising awareness of researchers and other professionals, in order to promote knowledge and approach to different audiences.

These actions will seek to learn about good practices from different cultural environments at the national and international level, through reference documents, case studies, and discussions and lectures with guests who can contribute to the theoretical framework of this group.

It is also understood as an objective of the group the collaboration with its theoretical and practical expertise and with its discussions, within the scope of activities related to the Chair, namely to the study groups, regarding the Department of Museology of the Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies.

The actions involved here will take the form of support regarding the use of accessibility resources and actions to raise awareness of issues related to diversity.

Taking into account the barriers commonly encountered by people with disabilities in society, it is intended to raise the agenda of the discussion by expanding the dialogue about ableism and the different forms of exclusion. Since attitudinal accessibility is the main agenda listed by people with disabilities, as the most important form of inclusion, it is understood the role of this group in collaborating with the social movement of people with disabilities to minimize attitudes and actions rooted in structural ableism. From this point of view, the other dimensions of accessibility and their potential within museums and other museological and museographic initiatives will be addressed.

The meetings take place fortnightly and will be promoted through meetings for discussion of texts, case presentations and Conversation Circles (according to Freire’s terminology) conducted by guest professors, people with disabilities and reference professionals for the agenda.
